    Good Evening Old Orchard Families,

The 2020-2021 School Start Task Force has been continuing to meet regularly to provide guidance to the Governing Board. On June 12th, Superintendent Pelzel provided five zoom sessions to update parents on the work of the Task Force.  If you were not able to attend, please find the presentation on the District website under "What's New"- School Start Task Force www.newhallschooldistrict.com.

At last night’s Governing Board meeting, the Board gave direction for the District to move forward on gathering enrollment numbers for the two learning models (NSD Digital Learning Academy and AM/PM Blended Learning) for next fall.  Further information about the two models is attached.

Please complete this form https://forms.gle/kEfjvNcWJfd6BxUE7 for each of your children. This will be your final decision for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.  We will be using your response to create classes and teaching assignments.  If state and county guidelines allow the District to fully open, we will do so.  However, in order for us to have time to adequately prepare for the start of school, we need your immediate feedback by no later than June 29th at 10:00 am. Thank you for your continued support.

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Hintz

Buenas Tardes Familias de Old Orchard,

What's New"- School Start Task Force www.newhallschooldistrict.com.

    Atentamente,
    Sr. Hintz

Old Orchard Families/Nuestro Familias de Old Orchard,
Please listen to our student speeches about their Old Orchard journey.

Escuche nuestros maravillosos discursos estudiantiles sobre su viaje a Old Orchard. ¡Que tengan un verano maravilloso!

    Good Morning NSD Families,

I hope that this communication finds you and your family enjoying the start of summer vacation.  Last Friday I held five different Zoom meetings with parents to provide information on the work of the School Start Task Force based on the latest guidance and information from the State and County Public Health Department.  If you were not able to attend, I would encourage you to go to the District website and click on the “School Start Task Force” link where you will find a recording of the entire presentation as well as many other informative documents.

During the meeting, I shared that the Task Force would be sending out a survey to families today to gather more information from families in terms of your plans for the start of school.  However, yesterday I attended a meeting with the LA County Office of Education with all 80 superintendents from across LA County where I was given an embargoed preview of the latest LA County Public Health Department K-12 guidance document.  In this meeting, I shared my opinion and voice concerns around some of the guidance.  The feedback provided will be going back to Dr. Ferrer from the LA County Public Health Department for her consideration before she officially releases the document early next week.

Based on this latest information, the School Start Task Force determined that it would be better to wait until we have this updated information before we survey each family.  As such, we plan to send out an updated survey a week from today.  We ask that when this survey comes to you from your school principal, that you again complete one form for each child.  The decisions from this survey will be instrumental in finalizing classroom assignments, transportation considerations, extended learning childcare needs, and other critical pieces to our plan.  We recognize that there are many unknowns, but we continue to be committed to creating the highest quality educational experience for your children this coming school year.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff Pelzel, Superintendent of Schools

Congratulations boy and girls!  We are so proud of all the work and the effort that you do.  We are sorry we could not do these Trimester Awards in person.  The awards will be placed in your pickup bags at the end of the school year.
Thank you for working so hard.
    Mr. Hintz and Mrs. Diamond

    School Effectiveness Survey

Every year we look for feedback on how our school is doing.  Attached you will find this year’s school effectiveness survey.  We ask that you take some time to complete the survey and submit at your earliest convenience.

Next year: At this time the Newhall School District is working on plans for the new school year.  The District has formed a task force that consists of parents and a variety of staff members.  Since we do not know what August will look like at this time they are brainstorming ideas and talking about what school might look like in the fall.  The Task Force will be seeking input in the weeks ahead.  The goal is to have different options for the Governing Board to consider in June so that families can plan accordingly.

A message from OLD ORCHARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
    2020 Census
It is anonymous, safe, easy and allocates more funding for our Newhall community and schools regardless of the governor’s budget and revise. The funds generated by the Census provide services related to education, housing, transportation, healthcare, recreation and more to all Newhall community members.
The Newhall community lost thousands of dollars in the last census as we did not report all children living in our community.   This occurred across LA County and thus they are targeting the 43 LEAs with the Hardest to Count (HTC) communities.
    Everyone matters!

Family Resource Centers:  Every member of the Newhall School District believes strongly that empowerment and inspiration are key toour students becoming passionate global citizens who problem solve and embrace diversity. We know that children achieve their greatest potential through collaboration and perseverance.

Understanding the significant economic challenges that many families face, the Newhall School District is
committed to collaborating with parents/guardians by providing wrap around supports to those in need. We
are pleased to announce the opening of two vital resources for family support. Our Family Resource Centers
are designed to provide immediate food and clothing provisions, and serve as a conduit connecting families to
critical community partners, service organizations and government agencies that have resources for short and
    long-term support.
The Family Resource Center at McGrath serves families with children who attend McGrath Elementary
    School.
The Family Resource Center at Wiley Canyon is available to serve families with children who attend
any of the other nine schools across the Newhall School District.
If your family needs support, we are here to help. If your child attends McGrath Elementary or Newhall
Elementary, to arrange an appointment, please contact Jason Busack, Social Worker, at 291-4090. If your
child attends any of the other schools in NSD, to arrange an appointment, please contact the Community
Liaison or School Counselor at your child's school. You may also contact Gina Rodriguez, District Liaison for
the Family Resource Center, at 661-291-4020.

    Newhall.

Important Safety Items:  We are asking for your help at arrival and dismissal in order to maintain safety and keep the flow of traffic moving.   We are asking that you take note of these important safety items.
    • The staff parking lot is closed to student drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.  Only staff may enter the parking lot.  We have seen parents pull in and go out the reverse way causing a dangerous situation at the entrance of our parking lot.
    • Families need to use the crosswalk at the East and West end of the school along Avenida Rondel.  Please do not walk your child or signal a child to walk across the street at arrival or dismissal.  This is a dangerous situation that is putting our children at risk, and it does not reinforce good traffic safety habits for our children.
    • Drivers should always be aware of the rules of traffic.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated in avoiding these traffic violations.
    • Do not make U-Turns in front of school or along the valet line up
    • Do not double park on the streets
    • Do not park in red zones
    • Do not park in our neighbor’s driveways
    • Do not block our neighbor’s driveways

For easy access to school, there is parking on Lyons Ave. and our back gate is open 7:30-7:55 am for arrival and open again at 2:40 for dismissal.  Supervision is available on campus starting at 7:30 AM.  We also have a morning valet with staff to assist with drop off.  By using valet, you will help keep our children and the community safe. I hope by sending you this reminder that we are not offending you, because we do want parents and community members to feel welcome at our school; however, we also want to ensure that all children enter and leave the school safely.  I know that by working together we can help you plan ahead when picking up and dropping off your children.

2018-19 CAASPP TESTING - Recently, Newhall School District students in grades three through six participated in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). In addition, English learner students in all grades took the summative English Language Proficiency Test.  Student Score Reports from this state testing are now starting to be posted and are being released in waves. You can access your child’s results electronically through the parent portal on our student information system, Aeries. If you are unable to access your student’s Score Report through the online parent portal, you may contact your school’s office for assistance.
