Welcome to the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program and Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) Homepage for the Newhall School District!
The Newhall School District proudly offers two state-funded after school programs (ASES and ELOP) designed to provide students with consistent, high-quality experiences across all campuses. While the funding sources differ, both programs share the same commitment to supporting the whole child through engaging, hands-on learning beyond the regular school day.
Students in TK–6th grade have the opportunity to participate in activities that foster academic growth, creativity, physical wellness, and social-emotional development in a safe and supportive environment. Our goal is to create enriching spaces where every child feels connected, confident, and inspired to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What is ELOP and ASES?
The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) and the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES) are free after-school programs available at all Newhall School District sites. Both programs support students through a balance of academic assistance, enrichment activities, and physical recreation, all conducted on each school’s campus.
- What is an ASES funded site?
McGrath, Newhall, and Wiley Canyon are ASES-funded sites. These sites offer the same high-quality programming as ELOP sites but operate under different district and state reporting requirements.
- What is an ELOP funded site?
Meadows, Old Orchard, Oak Hills, Peachland, Pico Canyon, Stevenson Ranch, and Valencia Valley are ELOP-funded sites. These sites offer the same enriching after-school programming as ASES sites but are supported through Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) funding.
- What is the eligibility criteria?
All ELOP campuses require each student to qualify for the program. Priority registration will be given to families that are Unduplicated including Homeless, Foster Care, students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and English Learners.
- Is my student guaranteed a spot?
No. Space is limited and students are accepted by order of their registration completion date.
- How do I enroll my child if they attend an ASES or ELOP funded site?
See Interest List/Enrollment Tab.
- What will my child do during the ASES/ELOP after school program?
ELOP stands for Expanded Learning Opportunities. All ASES/ELOP programs are designed to enrich and extend student learning through a variety of engaging experiences. Students participate in hands-on STEM activities, targeted tutoring, structured play, social-emotional learning, music lessons, organized sports, arts and crafts, performing arts, and more. Our goal is to create a well-rounded, stimulating environment that supports growth in all areas of development.
- Is daily attendance mandatory? What if my child(ren) participates in other activities during the summer on a regular basis?
During the school year, students are highly encouraged to participate in the full program each day-beginning immediately after school and continuing until pickup at either 5:00 or 6:00 PM, depending on the site. The goal of ASES/ELOP is to offer a consistent and enriching experience, which requires full-day participation on all scheduled program days. Similarly, during the summer program, students are encouraged to attend the entire day, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Are the breakfast, lunch, and snacks included or do we need to provide them?
Yes, meals and snacks are provided. For the after-school program, a meal and a snack are offered. During the Spring and Summer programs, students receive breakfast, lunch, and snacks. If your child prefers, you’re welcome to send food from home-participation in the provided meals is not required. We also encourage families to send a reusable water bottle with their child to refill throughout the day.
- During extreme heat, will the kids be allowed to stay inside the classroom?
Staff will monitor the heat and follow NSD district protocols relating to hot weather.
- Should my student be potty trained before attending ELOP?
We strongly encourage you to potty train your child before you send them to ELOP as aides cannot assist students with restroom needs. Routine restroom breaks will be offered throughout the ELOP session and we ask for parents to provide an extra change of clothes in case of an accident.
